CO2 emissons fell with the economy last year!  CO2 emissions had fallen 3% in  2008, but multiple factors account for the fall last year. As the Ars Technica article states, the drop in emissions wasn’t completely attributable to the fall in GDP; some of the fall was due to trends that may continue in the next few years towards higher mileage cars and cleaner industries.  Here are the charts!

C02 Emissions Year over Year (DOE)

Now what?  You tell me.  Is CO2 something worthy of a law to block its emission like the Cap and Trade bill, or is this something that will work itself out?  Alternatively, are CO2 emissions something we should even worry about?

I’m not sure if Climate Change (aka Global Warming in the Summer) is real or not. But, I do believe the less we pollute our earth the better off we will all be. I definitely don’t think Cap and Trade is the answer. The answer lies in elecrifying many of the things that are powered by combustion today. Then, we just need to find cleaner sources of electricity. It’s all starting to happen. It will just take some time.

    Bret,

I do agree on a reduction of pollution – but I don’t think I’m comfortable adding C02 to a lineup of NOX, Hg, SO2 and VOCs. Does that mean that I’m polluting every time I exhale?

You are polluting everytime you exhale. Brush your damn teeth ya bum.

Obscure reference. Cows emitting CO2 and other pollution. http://www.greendiary.com/entry/cow-emissions-far-more-responsible-than-co2-from-cars-in-global-warming/

Also humans emit some of these gasses (not including the power consumption that we require) and there is 6.5 billion of us. Its ironic that we all need this planet so dearly but yet we are destroying it just by being here (destroying it basically meaning that it is less desireable for our “needs”). Human population is growing exponentially. Are we inevitably doomed?
