How has the recession been affecting the job market?  A new report from the research firm Towers Watson says that workers are tending to stick with the same employer as long as possible in the midst of the current recession (US Workers were surveyed in November and December).  The number of workers in the survey who say they want to work for a single company or two or three companies is an impressive 79%.

Job Security

Perhaps it took an “unemployment number wake-up call” for so many workers to be happy with the employment they have.  Reproduced below is a chart showing the median number of weeks of employment.  In a country where half of unemployed workers have been unemployed more than 20 weeks, a little job security goes a long way.

I love my (day) job, and have no plans to consider alternatives… the recession didn’t change that.  How about you?  Have your attitudes changed due to the economic conditions?

I’ve only changed companies once in my 22-year career, Paul. I did it 12 years ago because my career was stagnating at the time and I needed a bigger challenge.

In my industry, my colleagues who have managed to stay with one company their whole career are in much better position than those of us who made a job change or two in our careers – at least with respect to things like vacation time, pensions and retirement health care.

One point I’d like to make is I have found that the chronic job-hoppers are usually the first ones to go when times get tough. Anecdotal evidence, yes – but it makes sense.

Loyalty tends to pay dividends when the stakes are highest.

    All the best,

    Len
